The weekend of September 8 was a weekend of firsts. Some folks prepared for the first weekend of the 2007-2008 football season. Others prepared for the final round of the BMW Championship, the third leg of the first ever PGA playoffs.
Neither of these events ranked as most important, however, as this weekend marked the inaugural league play of South Florida Elite Futbol Club, Inc.
The Club opened with its Under 9 boys soundly defeating Palm Beach Academy White 8-0. The game ended in the second half on the eighth goal. The Under 12 boys followed with a 7-2 win over Palm Beach Academy Red. The game was never in doubt, as the Elite boys built a 4-0 lead by halftime. Opening day closed with the most competitive match of the day. Our U-11 team battled a strong Wellington squad in a close see-saw match that resulted in our team emerging as 2-1 victors.
Sunday began with the most thrilling match of the weekend. Under clear Florida skies, our Under 16 boys took the field at 9 A.M against the vaunted Kendall Coalition. Building on their recent championship at the Disney Showcase tournament, Kendall pounced on our boys, jumping to a 3-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of play. Our boys did not quit. Displaying a never-say-die attitude, our boys shook off the morning cobwebs, tightened the defense and shut down the Kendall offense. SFE ended the game with three straight goals to tie Kendall 3-3. SFE’s Under 15s then easily handled Jupiter Sting 7-1. The match was never in doubt. Not to be outdone, our U-13 boys took a 6-0 lead against Sunrise into halftime, and finished the game 8-0 by mid-second half. The weekend closed with one of the most delightful games of the weekend. SFE’s Under 10 boys (shown in picture above) took on Boca United Gold on their wet Logger’s Run field. Our boys fell behind 1-0 early. We drew even in the first half, but lost the hard-fought battle 2-1.
Appreciation
A heart-felt thank you to our players. Each and every one of you made us proud. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Thank you to our parents for your commitment and for getting the children to the fields.
Thank you to our coaches, Charlie, Pitu, Christian, Mauricio and Rodolfo.
Last, but by no means least, thank you to all our volunteers who made the weekend, and this wonderful Club, possible. Because we are sure to leave someone out, we will not specifically identify them. You know who you are.
Onward and upward!
